Spinelli Real Estate agent Adam Spinelli said the previous “record” for a house sale in the suburb was a mere $1,700,000.
The architecturally designed home at 32 Dovers Drive has five bedrooms, two kitchens and five bathrooms and is perched on the top of Hill 60.
Huge decks and a heated infinity pool and spa perch around the home with views stretching out to Port Kembla beach, Lake Illawarra and the Illawarra Escarpment.
It’s also equiped with an expensive entertainment system for modern-day Gatsby-style parties.
Smart C-Bus technology (home automation) throughout means the residents can dim the lights and crank the music at the press of their smartphone from anywhere in the world.
This can also control everything from switching on airconditioning to pulling down blinds.
Mr Spinelli said the new owners were not Sydney billionaires but rather Illawarra locals.
Made of solid concrete the house uses materials in line with its clifftop environment like ironbark hardwood, dark stone granite and natural ceramics.
The split level home even has a glass floor that channels sunlight to lower areas of the house, while many fittings have been imported from Europe.
According to Domain Group the median (or middle) price for a four-bedroom home in Port Kembla is $577,000 with 10 sold since January 1 this year.
So far 20 three-bedroom homes have sold with a median of $550,000.
Port Kembla is becoming a popular destination for homebuyers and developers with plenty of older homes either being renovated or knocked down for new builds.
Meantime the state government announced last August it will inject $330,000 into the suburb to rejuvenate the main street as part of Wollongong City Council’s revitalisation plan.
While four major cruise ships carrying thousands of passengars have stopped at Port Kembla since October last year, a boost to the Illawarra’s economy and tourism.
Waterfront properties featured heavily in the Domain Group’s Top Selling Illawarra Properties of 2016 list, the highest a 1970s brown brick cliff-top house in Wombarra for $3,500,000.
Coming in second was a beachside penthouse on Cliff Road in Wollongong, selling for $2,775,000.
