An epileptic seizure in June put her career on hold, but Nisbet has been given the green light by her neurologist to resume riding.

The 22-year-old returned to track work a couple of weeks ago and rode in her first trial at Nowra on Sunday.

She hopes to make her racing return next weekend, which could open the door for her to ride on Canberra Racing's biggest day of the year - Black Opal Stakes Day.

Thoroughbred Park's Super Sunday features four black-type races, including the group 3 Black Opal (1200 metres) and the $200,000 Canberra Cup (2000m).

Magic Millions Two-year-old Classic winner Houtzen could use the Black Opal as a stepping stone to the $3.5 million Golden Slipper a fortnight later if heavy rain makes for a wet track in Brisbane this weekend.

Nisbet rode Gratz Vella's Motime in last year's Opal - her second in Canberra's biggest race - and while a ride in it on Super Sunday would have been a dream return, she's simply relieved to be back in her silks.

"At first a few people said they didn't think I'd be able to ride again so I thought that was it, but then I spoke to Racing NSW and they told me there's a couple of jockeys riding with it and once I got a clearance I was okay to come back," she said.

"I've only had the initial seizure thankfully, so physically I've been fine the whole time and I haven't had to work on a lot, just my fitness."

Nisbet passed the time during her enforced lay-off helping out around the Thoroughbred Park stables, while juggling appointments with specialists.

But she's now back riding track work for her father John and his training partner Ron Weston.

Hopefully it draws to a close a frustrating few years for the young hoop, who's had spells out with broken bones and she and also missed a ride due to heavy Melbourne traffic.

"It has been a pretty tough nine months. I still got to work on the ground for dad which helped, but I was coming home during the day and wasn't able to do anything because I couldn't drive either," Nisbet said.

"It was a really good feeling getting back in the saddle. I was very sore for a good week, but I'm starting to feel a lot better now."

She wasn't nervous ahead of her first barrier trial back, which was on one of her dad's horses, Denman Diva, at Nowra on Sunday.

Nisbet almost gave riding away after a testing time as an apprentice in the stables of David Hayes and Ciaron Maher.

But she returned to Canberra and had just claimed the apprentice jockey's premiership at both Canberra and Goulburn three days before the seizure struck.

It was another setback in her young career, but one she's hoping to have put in the past.

She praised her family for their ongoing support on her road to recovery.

"I broke my leg a year before the seizure and I'd only just got to a good point where I was getting a good book of rides in most districts," Nisbet said.

"Obviously it will take a long time get up and going again and getting rides back. It could take a year, but I'm hoping it would be a bit earlier than that."
