This is the first time the Cupid’s Undie Run has come to Wollongong, thanks to Illawarra resident Julia Szulerowski.
The 1.5-kilometre run – which originated in the US in 2009 – shines the light on a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis which affects more than 7000 Australians.
Mrs Szulerowski and her daughter Jessica have the most common form of the condition, which causes tumours to form in the brain, spinal cord and nerves. The condition can’t be cured through treatment may help.
“When we first signed up we only had eight people, and those eight people were on the committee and it got a bit nerve-wracking,” Mrs Szulerowski said.
“My initial goal was 30 … and now we have 63.”
At last count the Wollongong contingent had raised $15,530 though that figure may rise.
