If the performances at the recently held ACT titles are any indication, then Illawarra Blue Stars should be looking forward to some top results in this week’s NSW Open men’s and women’s state titles. A number of NSW athletes travelled to the capital to tune themselves up for this weekend’s titles, but it also gave the ACT some great athletics.

IBS members took this opportunity of top competition, with senior male athletes being a very strong contingent. Sprinters Lachlan Parry, Kyle Grubnick, Joel Bootin-Noonon, Chris Devery, Cameron Chisolm and Connor Dymond, along with female sprinter Stephanie Power, should be happy with their performances, with Grubnic and Parry making the open 100m final, and Devery and Booton-Noonan running good times in their 100m and then backing up and recording good long jumps with Booton-Noonan recording a solid 6.5 and Devery jumping 6m20.
Connor Dymond ran a good race in the hurdles to take out 9th overall whilst his time of 11.50 in the 100m was impressive. Stephanie Power came up against some class female sprinters but she too should be happy moving into the NSW titles this weekend. She is confident she can bring her time of 12.13 and 24.70 down this coming weekend.
Whilst some of our seniors were in the ACT, some of the club’s members travelled to All Comers at Homebush and in telling conditions, Grace Adams and sister Asylnn performed well in both hurdles and sprints whilst Masters athlete Gianna Mogentale ran in the 60m and 100m, as did Mike Daly. All members used this meet as an extra hit-out prior to masters state titles and Australian youth Championships for the Adams sisters.
Out in regional Sydney we had another lot of our club members take part in their regional Little A’s titles. It is hoped that some of them will head off to the state titles later on and meet up with their club mates who took part recently in Wagga.
Overall the club has moved well into state titles and with the talent in Sydney, our club members will be hoping they can make the state titles final of both the 100m and 200m. Connor Dymond will be aiming for a top placing in the hurdles and having already qualified for the national titles, he will be hoping his time will come down a little to push him into a top finish.
The standard of both the men’s and women’s sprints this weekend at state, is very high, so a top spot will be a just reward for our open men and women. Devery an Booton-Noonon will also be aiming for a top ten spot in the highly competitive open men’s long jump.
IBS will have its final round of competition for the summer season next Sunday, but the competition on the track last weekend was of a very high standard. Full fields took part in most events and it was the steeplechase field of 19 competitors that impressed. The club is seeing a group of talented young junior athletes who may well and truly develop into strong contenders in this event.
With the track resurfacing to take place the first week of March, Blue Stars will wind up next Sunday with round 4 of competition. But many of the clubs athletes will be gearing themselves up for the major meets of state and national titles, with coaches making alternative arrangements for training purposes. If in doubt please call Valmai on 4262 8498.
