Police were called to a picnic ground at Bendeela, following reports the man had waded into the river with a friend and gotten into difficulty while swimming.
A large-scale search of the area was launched, including volunteers from the State Emergency Service (SES) and two helicopters.
Eventually, police divers found the man's body in the water about 6.15pm.
Local detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
A brief will be prepared for the information of the NSW Coroner.
Monday, 3.35pm: Two rescue choppers are bound for a riverside camping ground in the Kangaroo Valley, where a swimmer disappeared Monday afternoon.
Initial reports indicate a 25-year-old Nepalese national entered the Kangaroo River at Bendeela Recreational Area shortly after 3pm.
The man’s distressed wife raised the alarm when he could not be located a short time later.
Authorities have been told the missing man cannot swim.
An ambulance rescue chopper, and the Westpac Life Saver helicopter is en route to the site.
4.15pm: The Westpac chopper is searching the area from overhead.
Divers have also been called in to assist with the search.
