The whiskey Canadian Club is also quite popular around the world.
But while Eric Dunan enjoys a whiskey or two, his favourite Canadian export is jazz sisters Ingrid and Christine Jensen.
That’s why the Wollongong Conservatorium jazz director was ecstatic when the sisters agreed to headline the Wollongong Conservatorium Spring Jazz Series on Saturday, November 5.
The Mike Nock Trio will also perform at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music Auditorium, Glennifer Brae from 7pm.
Trumpet player Dunan was particularly keen to see one of the world’s leading trumpet players Ingrid Jensen perform.
‘’I must confess I have made a special effort to get one of my favourite trumpet players of all-time to come to Wollongong,’’ he said.
‘’I’ve been following Ingrid’s career since I discovered her in the early 90’s. When I caught word that she was coming to Australia, I put other projects on the back burner to make sure we scored this gig.
‘’When I found out she was bringing her sister and Mike Nock’s Trio was going to accompany her I couldn’t believe my luck.
‘’This is a massive coup for Wollongong.’’
The sisters are in Australia as part of the Sydney Improvised Music Association’s annual Women’s International Jazz Festival.
Trumpeter Ingrid Jensen is regarded as one of the world’s leading trumpet players having established her credentials on the New York jazz scene in the 1990’s performing with the Maria Schneider Orchestra as well leading her own bands.
Jensen graduated with a degree from Berklee College of Music, but before she caught her first break in the music business, she “paid dues” and honed her skills busking in the New York subway system for a year, sometimes playing for six to eight hours per day.
She regularly collaborates with her saxophonist sister Christine, who leads her own professional jazz orchestra that has received rave reviews and awards internationally.
Both sisters have won Canada’s most esteemed record industry honour, the Juno Award
Tickets for the November 5 concert cost $25/$20/ $15 and are available at www.wollcon.com.au/events
