That’s why Muller to many Australian musicians is the embodiment of the popular video game Guitar Hero – despite the fact he doesn’t have long hair and chooses not to wear leather pants.
And that’s why the Adelaide born musician always plays to sell-out crowds when he performs in Wollongong.
Wollongong Conservatorium of Music jazz director Eric Dunan expects that will be the case again when Muller plays at the Con on Monday, October 3.
This time around the 2000 National Jazz Award winner and multiple ARIA award winner (2000, 2003) will be joined on stage by his stellar ‘’New Quartet’’.
‘’It’s always a fantastic show when James plays here,’’ Dunan said.
‘’He’s such an incredible musician that guitarists and instrumentalists come from all around just to hear him play - it’s always a packed house. He brings killer musicians down with him too, which is just an added bonus.’’
American jazz guitar legend John Scofield once said ‘’James has it all’’.
It is hard to argue this point.
Having taught himself to play guitar from age 12, Muller burst onto the Sydney jazz scene at age 21 and has gone on to record four critically acclaimed albums, three of which were nominated for ARIA awards.
He has also performed with jazz and rock stars such as Vince Jones, Jimmy Barnes, Renae Geyer and Christian McBride.
For the Wollongong gig, Muller will be joined on stage by his ‘’New Quartet’’ – Sam Anning on bass, exciting young trumpeter Matt Jodrell and Perth-based drummer Ben Vanderwal.
‘’This might possibly be one of the finest jazz ensembles ever assembled in this country,’’ Dunan said. ‘’It’s certainly one of the most well credentialed.’’
James Muller ‘’New Quartet’’ plays at the Wollongong Conservatorium of Music Auditorium, Glennifer Brae on October 3 from 7pm.
Tickets cost $17/$13/$10 online or $20/$15/$10 at the door.
