Illawarra will host some of the outstanding young baseballers in the state at the NSW Junior Country Championships over the October holiday long weekend.

The titles at Fred Finch Park will feature teams from Tamworth, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Newcastle, Central Coast and Shoalhaven/Nowra.
Illawarra will have a team in each of the four divisions.
Illawarra Junior Baseball League (IJBL) president Brett Shipp said the association was always happy to host the prestigious tournament.
“It’s a great tournament. As one of the big three [associations], Illawarra have had the privilege of hosting this tournament on numerous occasions,’’ Shipp said.
“If past years are any guide, Illawarra and Newcastle teams should do well.’’
The youngest players will compete in the Zooka Division (under-10s), followed by the Little League Minor Division (under-12s), Little League Major Division for under-14s and the Senior Division for under-16s.
The under-16s titles will also act as a selection trial for the national championships.
Play begins on October 1, with finals on Monday, October 3.
Top Illawarra players and Sydney Blue Sox stars Trent D’Antonio and Josh Dean will hold a special talk for the Country Championship juniors, parents and officials at Illawarra Leagues Club on the first night of the tournament, Saturday October 1, from 6pm-7.30pm.
The discussion will cover all areas of baseball from developing junior talent through to aspiring to play at the highest level.
Meanwhile, Wollongong will host Australia’s best players with an Australian Baseball League clash between Canberra Cavalry and Sydney Blue Sox on November 27.
Northern Pirates’ home at Dalton Park, Towradgi will host the match.
Wests Cardinals’ premiership winning stars Josh Dean, Trent D’Antonio and Alex Howe were key members of the Blue Sox team last season and are likely to feature for the Blue Sox.
“We have this tournament to look forward to then the ABL fixture. It is an exciting time for baseball fans in the region,’’ Shipp said.
