But the three-time ARIA winner is known most for the way he plays the oud – the Middle Eastern precursor to the lute.

This Saturday Wollongong audiences will get a rare chance to experience the magic of the oud in the hands of one of the best oud maestros in the world.

Tawadros is in the middle of a national tour which includes a sole performance at the Wollongong Town Hall on September 24.

A spokesman said this performance will be a ‘’rare and intimate solo concert showcasing Joseph’s joyous musicality in an evening of mesmerising and original music’’.

‘’Joseph Tawadros’ masterful playing along with his highly entertaining on-stage presence guarantees a highly-enjoyable, not-to-be-missed performance,’’ the spokesman said.

Now based in London, Tawadros has jammed with jazz, world and classical musicians and even joined US rockers Wheatus on stage in London for an oud-tinged rendition of their hit Teenage Dirtbag.

Two big projects in development for 2017 performances are a program of Tawadros’ compositions with the BBC Symphony Orchestra (March) and an Oud Concerto with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (May ).
